Local Farmer Hears From Alabama Congressman During Row Crops Short Course

Bishop Receives Alabama Farmers Federation Senior Leader Award
Colbert County Farmers Federation member L.O. Bishop received the Senior Leader Award from the Alabama Farmers Federation during an awards ceremony Dec. 3.
Bishop has served on the county Federation Board of Directors for 55 years, including 48 years as the organization’s president. He is a past Alabama Farmers Federation State Board director and past North Area vice president.
“My dad has dedicated his life to helping people,” said Luther Bishop, current Colbert County Farmers Federation president. “He always told me if you helped someone expecting something in return, you weren’t really helping anyone but yourself.”
Bishop received the award during the second general session of the Federation's 97th Annual Meeting in Montgomery, which drew over 1,200 attendees to the Capital City. From left are Federation Executive Director Paul Pinyan and Bishop.
The Senior Leader Award is reserved for individuals who are over 70 years old and have served as a county Farmers Federation president, State Women’s Leadership Committee chair or Federation State Board member.
Oustanding Young Farmers Committees Receive Recognition
County Young Farmers committees received Awards of Excellence during the Alabama Farmers Federation’s 97th annual meeting in Montgomery Dec. 2. They were honored for agricultural promotion, outreach and education efforts in 2018.

Colbert County Student Participates In Alfa Youth Leadership Conference

Colbert County Student Studying Agriculture Earns College Scholarship
Auburn University student Kayla Grisham of Colbert County received a $1,750 scholarship from the Alabama Farmers Agriculture Foundation and Colbert County Farmers Federation. She was recognized at the Alabama Farmers Federation’s Scholarship Reception at the Ham Wilson Livestock Arena in Auburn Sept. 20. Grisham, who is from Leighton, is a junior studying animal science, production management. From left are Federation President Jimmy Parnell and Grisham.
Colbert County Farm-City Committee Recognized During Awards Luncheon
The Colbert County Farm-City Committee received the Division I Best Civic Club Activities Award during the Alabama Farm-City Awards Luncheon April 5 in Birmingham. Division I includes counties with a larger population.
The committee brought the Farm-City message to six civic club meetings in Muscle Shoals, Tuscumbia and Sheffield, which reached over 300 people.

Isbell Makes Final Four In National YF&R Collegiate Discussion Meet
Colbert County’s Ellie Isbell made history as the first Alabamian to make the Final Four in the Collegiate Discussion Meet. Isbell, an agricultural communications graduate at Auburn University and former Alabama Farmers Federation intern, competed in the national contest at the Young Farmers & Ranchers Conference in Reno, Nevada, Feb. 16-18.

County Farmers Federation President Re-elected To Serve On State Commodity Committee
Colbert County's Luther Bishop was re-elected second vice chairman of the Alabama Farmers Federation State Pork Committee at the 2018 Commodity Organizational Meeting in Montgomery Feb. 6.
