Ezzell Competes In Annual State Heritage Cooking Contest
Shirley Ezzell of Franklin County entered her recipe for Bacon-Wrapped Dates in the 2018 Heritage Cooking Contest. The annual contest is sponsored by the Alabama Farmers Federation Women's Leadership Division and highlights a specific commodity. For 2018, pork was the highlighted commodity.
35-40 Pitted dates
35-40 salted, roasted almonds
1 lb. thinly sliced bacon, strips cut in half
2 Tbsp. grape jelly
1 Tbsp. clear corn syrup
1 tsp. vinegar-based barbeque sauce
Directions: Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Stuff each date with one salted almond. Wrap each date with one halfstrip of bacon and secure with a toothpick. Place stuffed dates on a baking rack placed inside a cookie sheet. Drizzle with prepared sauce. Bake, turning halfway through to ensure even cooking, 15-18 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Nunleys Named Outstanding Young Farm Family Finalists
Gannon and Kristin Nunley of Franklin County were finalists for the title of Alabama’s 2018 Outstanding Young Farm Family (OYFF). They were honored at the Alabama Farmers Federation’s 46th Commodity Producers Conference in Montgomery Aug. 4. As OYFF finalists, they received $500 from Alabama Ag Credit and Alabama Farm Credit. The Nunleys have six poultry houses and raise 50 head of cattle on their farm in Vina. From left are Federation President Jimmy Parnell, Kristin, Gannon, Alabama Farm Credit’s Taylor Quick.
