Lawrence County Farmers Federation Earns 2018 Award of Excellence
The Lawrence County Farmers Federation received the Award for Excellence Dec. 3. during the Alabama Farmers Federation’s 97th Annual Meeting in Montgomery. To earn the distinction, counties must score at least 80 points out of 100 on the award application, which covers involvement in agricultural programs, governmental affairs, county Women’s Leadership and Young Farmers committees.

Lawrence County Women's Leadership Committee Earns Achievement Award
The Lawrence County Women’s Leadership Committee was honored with an Outstanding County Award during the Alabama Farmers Federation’s 97th annual meeting in Montgomery, Dec. 3. The county committee, chaired by Sandra Terry, hosted county meetings; adopted a farm family and employees to spotlight and host a meal for; hosted a farm-to-fork dinner; promoted events through social media and local newspapers; collected pop tabs for and visited a Ronald McDonald House to provide supplies; partnered with special educators in the county and assisted with the special needs rodeo and prom for local students; participated in the county health fair; and had exhibits at local farmers markets. Henry Elected To State Young Farmers Committee
Mitchell Henry of Lawrence County was elected to a second two-year term on the State Young Farmers Committee during the Alabama Farmers Federation’s 97th annual meeting in Montgomery Dec. 3. He will serve North Alabama At-Large which includes Bibb, Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, Colbert, Coosa, Cullman, DeKalb, Etowah, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Hale, Jackson, Jefferson, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Morgan, Pickens, Randolph, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Winston counties. As a member of the 10-person committee, he will help organize the 2019 Young Farmers Conference and work to grow involvement throughout his district. Lawrence County Students Participate In Alfa Youth Leadership Conference
Lawrence County students Autumn Garrie, Kadi Redmon, Billy Cahela and Matt Glenn sharpened leadership skills during the Alfa Youth Leadership Conference at the 4-H Center in Columbiana Oct. 8-9. Garrie, Redmon and Cahela attend East Lawrence High School, while Glenn is a student at West Morgan High School. They were sponsored by the Lawrence County Farmers Federation. Henry Competes In Annual Young Farmers Discussion Meet Contest
Mitchell Henry of Moulton in Lawrence County was one of 15 competitors in the 2018 Young Farmers Discussion Meet contest at the Alabama Farmers Federation’s 46th Commodity Producers Conference in Montgomery Aug. 4. Discussion Meet simulates a committee meeting where contestants examine and problem-solve pressing agricultural issues. From left are Federation President Jimmy Parnell and Henry.
Oliver Competes In Annual State Heritage Cooking Contest
Daphane Oliver of Lawrence County entered her recipe for Cheese and Bacon Cracker Spread in the 2018 Heritage Cooking Contest. The annual contest is sponsored by the Alabama Farmers Federation Women's Leadership Division and highlights a specific commodity. For 2018, pork was the highlighted commodity.
Cheese and Bacon Cracker Spread
1 (8 oz.) package shredded sharp cheddar
3-4 chopped green onions
2 ½ oz. crumbled real bacon
Directions: Mix all ingredients together with just enough Miracle Whip to blend. Spread on crackers.
