Russell County Farmers Federation Earns 2018 Award of Excellence
The Russell County Farmers Federation received the Award for Excellence Dec. 3. during the Alabama Farmers Federation’s 97th Annual Meeting in Montgomery. To earn the distinction, counties must score at least 80 points out of 100 on the award application, which covers involvement in agricultural programs, governmental affairs, county Women’s Leadership and Young Farmers committees.

Laney Elected State Women's Leadership Committee Chair
Jo Ann Laney of Russell County was elected chair of the State Women’s Leadership Committee during the Alabama Farmers Federation’s 97th annual meeting in Montgomery Dec. 3. In addition to leading the 9-person committee, Laney will serve a one-year, ex-officio term on the Federation’s state board of directors. Celebrating 200 Years Of Alabama Agriculture With County Farm-City Events
The Russell County Farm-City Breakfast was Nov. 14 in Phenix City. Auburn University Extension Agronomist Charlie Mitchell was the guest speaker.
The Russell County Farm-City Committee revamped its displays this year with a promotion at the probate, tax and tag office.
Russell County Student Earns College Scholarship
Auburn University student Benjamin Smith of Russell County received a $1,750 scholarship from the Alabama Farmers Agriculture Foundation and Russell County Farmers Federation. He was recognized at the Alabama Farmers Federation’s Scholarship Reception at the Ham Wilson Livestock Arena in Auburn Sept. 20. Smith is a freshman studying agricultural business and economics and is from Phenix City. Laney Competes In Annual Heritage Cooking Contest
JoAnne C Laney of Russell County entered her recipe for Bacon Wrapped Clubs in the 2018 Heritage Cooking Contest. The annual contest is sponsored by the Alabama Farmers Federation Women's Leadership Division and highlights a specific commodity. For 2018, pork was the highlighted commodity.
Bacon Wrapped Clubs
2 tubs Club Crackers
1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese, softened
1 (12 oz.) package bacon
Directions: Spread half of the crackers with cream cheese then top them with the remaining crackers. Cut bacon in half. Wrap bacon around length of crackers. Bake in shallow pan after spraying with some non-stick cooking spray. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes or until brown.
Farmers Attend Annual Field Day
Around 50 farmers attended the Barbour and Russell counties row crop tour Sept. 6.
County Farmers Federation Hosts Annual Meeting
The Russell County Farmers Federation annual meeting was Aug. 20. The group voted on a recommendation to be sent to State Policy Development Committee dealing with wildlife damage to crops.
Martin Brings Home Prize In Annual Tablescapes Contest
Bonnie Martin of Russell County won first place in the tablescapes contest at the Alabama Farmers Federation’s 46th Commodity Producers Conference in Montgomery Aug. 4. She won $150, courtesy of the Federation’s Women’s Leadership Division, for her cotton-themed display.
