Alfa Young Farmers Contest Winners Receive Top Prizes

Through State Young Farmers contests, the future of agriculture took the spotlight at the Alabama Farmers Federation’s 95th annual meeting in Montgomery Dec. 4-5.

At the closing session, Lauren Cline of Lee County took top prize in the Discussion Meet, following finals centered on food labeling earlier that day.

Cline topped three other finalists: Limestone County’s Jerry Allen Newby, Marshall County’s Hunter McBrayer and Tallapoosa County’s Sid Phelps.

As Discussion Meet winner, Cline received a four-wheeler sponsored by First South Farm Credit.

Outstanding Young Farm Family and Excellence in Agriculture winners were announced earlier this year and received their prizes at the annual meeting.

Alabama’s 2016 Outstanding Young Farm Family is Stewart and Kasey McGill of Madison County and their children Allie, Reece and Peyton. They received a new General Motors Co. pickup truck from Alfa Insurance and Alabama Farmers Federation; a John Deere 825i Gator from Alabama Ag Credit and Alabama Farm Credit; and use of a John Deere tractor by John Deere and local John Deere dealers.

OYFF runners-up were Blount County’s Lance and Stephanie Miller and Marshall County’s John and Hannah Bevel. The runners-up received $500 from Alabama Ag Credit and Alabama Farm Credit.

Excellence in Agriculture winners Ben and Heather Maples of Limestone County received a John Deere zero-turn mower sponsored by Dow AgroSciences and a computer package from CCS/Valcom Wireless.

Young Farmers winners won more than $80,000 in prizes and will represent Alabama at the American Farm Bureau Federation annual convention in Phoenix, Arizona, this month.
