Gov. Kay Ivey announced the appointment of Vernon Barnett as commissioner of revenue Friday. He replaces Julie Magee, whose resignation was accepted May 5.
“The Alabama Department of Revenue is vital to state government, ensuring citizens are treated fairly and that all tax dollars are collected. Citizens must have confidence in their government, and that starts with the commissioner of revenue,” Ivey said. “This is the people’s business, and I have appointed Vernon Barnett as commissioner of revenue because he shares my commitment to integrity and honesty in government. I am confident Vernon has the necessary skills and experience to lead.”
Barnett comes to the Department of Revenue from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM), where he has served as executive counsel since 2011. He previously was chief deputy commissioner of the Alabama Department of Corrections from 2006 to 2011, and a deputy legal advisor to the governor. He also served as deputy solicitor general and assistant division chief in the Alabama Attorney General’s Office.
Alabama Farmers Federation Governmental and Agricultural Programs Director Brian Hardin said he’s confident Barnett will provide strong leadership for the Department of Revenue.
“The Federation worked with Vernon during his time at ADEM, and he’s always been fair, cooperative and genuinely interested in developing solutions that address the needs of farmers and the State of Alabama,” Hardin said. “He has strong ties to the farming community and appreciates the value of agriculture and forestry to our state’s economy, environment and communities. We congratulate Vernon on his new position and look forward to working with him on issues affecting Federation members.”
A graduate of Vanderbilt University and the University of Alabama School of Law, Barnett was recognized as one of the top young lawyers in the state, 2005-2006, and is a member of Vaughn Forest Church. He and his wife, Robyn Moudy Barnett, have two children, Ian and Olivia.
Barnett will officially begin his duties as commissioner of revenue May 22.
