A bill providing for voluntary registration of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) passed the House Transportation, Utilities and Infrastructure Committee Wednesday.
HB 519 by Rep. Will Ainsworth, R-Guntersville, would generate funds for education and training on ATV safety and the development and maintenance of ATV trails. Registration also aids law enforcement in the recovery of stolen vehicles.
The bill calls for a fee structure of $45 for ATVs operated for public use; $15 for private use; $50 for dealer-owned ATVs used for demonstration and testing; and $150 for manufacturer-owned ATVs used for testing. Registration would occur at the point of sale, and the dealer would be allowed to deduct $2.50 for processing. A $5 issuance fee would apply to all registrations.
The legislation awaits action in the full House.
