The Senate granted final passage Wednesday to legislation aimed at increasing participation in the Farm-to-School program. Gov. Kay Ivey is expected to sign the measure into law.
HB 53, sponsored by Rep. Elaine Beech, D-Chatom, specifies federal funds for school nutrition may be used to purchase products from Alabama farms and exempts those purchases from the competitive bid process.
The Federation’s David Cole said Beech championed the Farm-to-School legislation and other bills important to rural Alabama.
“Rep. Beech’s bill will allow more farmers and lunchrooms to participate in Farm-to-School by aligning Alabama’s program with federal law,” said Cole, legislative programs director for the House. “We appreciate her loyal support of Alabama farmers and rural families.”
