Legislation aimed at increasing participation in the Farm-to-School program is one vote away from Gov. Robert Bentley’s desk, following important votes this week in the House of Representatives and Senate Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee.
HB 53, sponsored by Rep. Elaine Beech, D-Chatom, specifies federal funds for school nutrition may be used to purchase products from Alabama farms and exempts those purchases from the competitive bid process. The legislation aligns Alabama’s program with federal law.
The bill passed the House Tuesday by a vote of 98-0, with 77 cosponsors. It passed the Senate committee Wednesday 8-0, and now heads to the full Senate for a final vote.
The Federation supports the legislation.
