The Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) will receive an additional $550,000 in the current fiscal year under a bill approved the final week of the legislative session.
HB 157 by Rep. Kyle South, R-Fayette, draws money from the Emergency Forest Fire Fund to pay expenses associated with wildfires last fall. The bill also provides supplemental funding for the Alabama Department of Insurance, the Department of Forensic Sciences and the Alabama State Board of Prosthetics and Orthotics.
The AFC incurred more than $1.5 million in additional expenses for man-hours and equipment costs because of the wildfires. Since 2011, General Fund appropriations for the AFC are down $8 million or 55 percent.
