Gov. Robert Bentley Tuesday issued an executive order creating a task force to study Alabama’s sales tax on groceries.
Revenue Commissioner Julie Magee will chair the group, which will include State Finance Director Clinton Carter; Alabama Rural Development Office Director Ron Sparks; Commissioner of Agriculture John McMillan; two state representatives appointed by Speaker of the House Mac McCutcheon; two state senators appointed by Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh; representatives from the Alabama Retail Association, Alabama Grocers Association and Heart Association; and a citizen, dietician and economist appointed by the governor.
The task force is charged with considering the impact of reducing or eliminating Alabama’s sales tax on groceries. Executive Order 28 specifically calls for the group to consider practices and tax structures of others states and their potential impact on state budgets, lifestyle choices and the economy. The task force must submit regulatory and statutory recommendations by June 1.
