Legislation that would redefine the timber severance taxes paid by forest product manufacturers unanimously passed the House of Representatives Thursday.
HB 313 by Rep. Elaine Beech, D-Chatom, is aimed at simplifying the severance tax and preventing double taxation of materials or residue from a single log. Among other changes, the measure would allow the rate basis of severance tax to be tonnage rather than board feet.
Alabama Farmers Federation is monitoring HB 313 and evaluating its potential impact on timber owners and the Alabama Forestry Commission.
