Public Service Commission Announces Changes For 205 Area Code

The creation of a new telephone area code in Alabama will change the way some residents dial their neighbors, according to a new release this week by the Alabama Public Service Commission.

Beginning Oct. 12, Alabamians in the 205 area code will be required to use the full 10-digit telephone number (area code plus seven-digit telephone number ) when placing local calls. The longer dialing format will be optional beginning April 13 to allow callers adequate time to adjust. The new requirement was prompted by the addition of the 659 area code within the existing 205 area.

Existing telephone numbers will not change, but new lines may be assigned the 659 area code beginning Nov. 12. Long distance calls will still be made using the 1+ 10-digit format. The new area code overlay will not change the definition of a local call, the rates of calls or the ability to dial three-digit numbers like 911.
