Ingredients

1 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup butter
1 cup granulated sugar, plus more for sprinkling
1 cup powdered sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cream of tartar

Preparation

In a large mixing bowl, cream together shortening and butter. Add sugars and mix; add vanilla. Sift together dry ingredients, and add to butter-and-sugar mixture. Mix well and roll dough into small balls. Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Sprinkle cookies with additional sugar immediately after removing from oven.
Note: Nancy uses a melon baller to shape cookies uniformly.
