Cool, comfortable cotton was the star of the Alabama Farmers Federation Women’s Division Cotton Fashion, Sewing and Quilting Contests held Aug. 9 in Birmingham. The contests were in conjunction with the Federation’s 36th Annual Commodity Producers Conference Aug. 7-9.Deloris Mount of Crenshaw County won the Hand-Stitched Quilting Contest; marking the third time she has won the statewide contest. Faustina Gosa of Lamar County won second place in the contest, while Annie Lou Harris of Cleburne County won third.Jennifer Oden of Etowah County won first place in the Machine-Stitched Quilting Contest. Second place went to Lavon Bonner of Choctaw County, and the third-place winner was Sandra Royster of Chambers County.Rhonda Hughes of Jefferson County won first place in the Decorative Pillow Contest. Gail Gosa of Lamar County won second place, and third place went to Mitzi Moran of Tallapoosa County.Models wearing cotton garments made for the State Sewing Contests in the Heirloom, Children’s, Young Adult and Adult Divisions entertained more than 300 people who attended the annual women’s luncheon at the Birmingham Marriott.Barbara Wallace of Perry County won first place in the Heirloom Division with a dress modeled by her granddaughter Morgan Wallace. The round yoke dress was constructed from peach cotton batiste with French cotton ecru lace Entredeaux and insertion, while the bottom of the dress was finished with ecru embroidery made with an endless hoop design. Betty Godsey of Winston County won second place in the Heirloom Division, and Mary Helen Benford of Chambers County won third.Bonnie Martin of Russell won first place in the Children’s Division, for clothes made for children ages 4-12. The winning outfit was modeled by her granddaughter Carly Puckett. It was a colorful, cool two-piece outfit made of 100 percent cotton. Gail Oden of Etowah County won second place in the Children’s Division, and Jennifer Cruise of Morgan County won third.Amie Hill of Cullman County won first place in the Young Adult Division with an eyelet lime green smock top and white gaucho pants. Second place went to Anna Elizabeth Pope of Choctaw County, and third place was won by Rachel Madaris of St. Clair County.Sissie Dougherty of Russell County won first place in the Adult Division with a navy and white checked jacket and white pants. The second-place winner was Medie Machen of Talladega County, and third place was won by Jan Parker of St. Clair County.Winners in each division received cash awards of $150 for first place, $100 for second place and $75 for third place.
