Row crop farmers impacted by poor economic conditions can apply for the Emergency Commodity Assistance Program starting March 19. Applications close Aug. 15.

Alabama Farmers Federation’s Mitt Walker said eligible farmers will receive a prefilled application via mail that notes individual payment calculations but can also apply online or in a Farm Service Agency office.

“We appreciate Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins for implementing this process, which should quickly get much-needed assistance in the hands and bank accounts of our farmers,” said Walker, the Federation’s National Affairs director. “American agriculture is hurting, and few are dealing with tougher times than our row crop guys. With spring planting just around the corner, we’re hopeful this will help farmers get another, hopefully profitable, crop in the ground.”

Initial payments will be 85% of the calculation authorized in the American Relief Act. Congress passed the measure in December, releasing $10 billion in federal aid to help row crop producers combat depressed commodity markets and sky-high inflation.

If funds remain after the first tranche of payments, a second will be issued after Aug. 15.
