Katelyn Harris, valedictorian of the 2009 Marbury High School senior class and past vice president of Alabama’s Central District, received one of 50 $1,000 scholarships for agricultural studies from the National FFA Organization in conjunction with the American Farm Bureau Federation and the Dodge Division of Chrysler LLC.The 18-year-old daughter of Marlin and Jean Harris of Marbury plans to attend Mercer University in Macon, Ga., this fall to pursue a degree in communications. “I’m trusting in God to see where He leads me with it,” said Katelyn. “I don’t want to be a newspaper editor in Kentucky or something like that. I don’t have a specific plan, although it would be a real blessing to work for a non-profit ministry.”Dodge provided funding, and a stipulation for earning the scholarship was that the FFA student had to be from a Farm Bureau family. Selection of winners also was based on the applicant’s academic record, FFA and other school and community activities, supervised agricultural experience program in agricultural education and future goals.According to John Colquitt, FFA advisor at Marbury High, Katelyn has served as vice-president of the Marbury FFA chapter, earned first in the 2007 state FFA competition for prepared public speaking and was on the school’s parliamentary procedure team which placed first.Dodge sponsors the scholarships as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. Scholarships are presented by Dodge dealers on behalf of the company.
