As far as acreage goes, it’s not much — only 2.74 acres to be precise. But what Davy and Heather Wright have packed onto that patch of ground near Plantersville in Dallas County is nothing short of remarkable: 279,590 potted flowering plants; 2,700 foliage plants; 3.64 million bedding plants; a high-tech 92,000-square-foot greenhouse; and 23,200 square feet of outside growing space”We attempt to manage the available space for maximum efficiency and turnover,” says Davy Wright, noting that the family utilized 115,000 square feet of space to produce a crop valued at more than $1 million in 2005.Wright’s Nursery & Greenhouse Inc., is a family business now in its 40th year, and one that Davy would like to someday be able to pass on to his children, Abrielle (“Abby”) and Noah. The business was started by Davy’s grandfather in 1966. “I have been interested in this business and this industry since I was very young. It’s really difficult to say when I first started working at the greenhouse business because I grew up there,” he said.Davy carried that interest to Auburn University where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in horticulture before returning home to Dallas County and the greenhouse business.”My wife and I have made significant contributions to the business,” Davy said. “I have learned to make a living doing something I enjoy.”
