1 (11-ounce) box refrigerated double crust pastry
4 Golden Delicious apples, peeled, cored, and halved
2 cups sugar
2 cups water
1 stick margarine or butter
1 teaspoon apple pie spice
Separate crusts and cut each into four squares. Place 1 apple half onto each square of pastry. Gather crust around apple to cover, pinching edges to seal. Place dumplings in a 9- x 13-inch baking dish. Combine remaining ingredients in a saucepan and heat to a boil. Pour over dumplings. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes, or until dumplings are golden brown. Serve warm with ice cream, if desired. (NOTE: Chopped nuts or raisins can be sprinkled over apples before sealing pastry. Also, for a richer color and taste, use 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup brown sugar.) Makes 8 servings.
