Ingredients

1 cup sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
3/4 cup solid vegetable shortening
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg, lightly beaten
Additional sugar

Preparation

Combine 1 cup sugar with flour, salt, soda and spices. Cut in shortening to resemble coarse crumbs. Stir in molasses and egg. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll in additional sugar. Place on lightly greased cookie sheets and bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes, or until cookies are set in the centers. Makes about 3 dozen.
