BUTTER ROLLS

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
3 3/4 cups milk, divided
1/4 cup oil
2 sticks butter or margarine, divided
3 cups sugar, divided
1 teaspoon vanilla

Preparation

Combine flour, baking powder, salt, 3/4 cup milk and oil in a bowl and mix to make a stiff dough. Turn out onto floured surface. Roll about 1/4-inch thick into a rectangle. Chip one stick of butter evenly over the dough and sprinkle with 1 cup of the sugar and vanilla. Roll up jelly roll fashion beginning with the long side. Cut into 1-inch slices and place, sides not touching, in a 9- x 13-inch pan. Bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes, or until golden brown. While rolls bake, combine remaining 3 cups milk, remaining 2 cups sugar and remaining stick of butter in a saucepan and heat over low heat until sugar dissolves and butter melts. Remove rolls from oven and pour milk mixture over rolls. Return to oven and bake 15 minutes or until milk mixture thickens. Makes 12.
