PEPPERMINT CANDY CANE COOKIES

Ingredients

1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
1 stick margarine, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon red food coloring
1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy
1/2 cup sugar

Preparation

Cream the shortening, margarine and sugar. Mix in egg and vanilla. Add flour and salt, mixing well. Divide dough in half. Mix red food coloring in to half of the dough. Roll teaspoonfuls of both colors of dough into 4-inch-long strips. Press one red and one plain strip together side by side. On a lightly floured board, twist strips in candy-cane fashion. Place on ungreased baking sheet and bake at 375 degrees 8-9 minutes. Combine crushed candy and sugar; sprinkle over cookies while still hot. Makes about 3 dozen.
